A Hawai'i December Morning

Okay, I don't mean to brag...but then again, maybe I do!  I can't help it!  Look at this gorgeous December morning in Kahalu'u!  This is what our winter is like. While our mainland counterparts have their White (albeit cold) Wintery Wonderland, this is what we are blessed with in our islands.

My dear friend and spiritual mentor, Alice Inoue, has done it again!

 
 

She has published yet another inspirational book called, "Be Happy! -It's Your Choice: Ten Ways to Keep Your Light Bright" and another DVD "Feng Shui Illuminated." Today she was at Borders to meet, greet at sign her books and DVDs.

When I got there people were lined up getting their copies! So exciting!

  

  

If you haven't read her first book, "A Loving Guide to These Shifting Times" you must get it! Her recent release of "Be Happy!" is a great addition to your library.  Not to mention her great collection of Feng Shui DVDS! Keep in mind these are also wonderful holiday gifts for your loved ones (hint! hint!).

Zoey my Zumi

I have lovingly named my new Zumi, Zoey. We've been having so much fun together!  I love that what she produces is maddeningly imperfect.  They're "comforting images" as my BSS and fellow artist, Debbie Friedrich, lovingly puts it.  It's so true as we are from the generation of 110, 120 and Polaroid Film.  Ahhhh...the good ol' days.

I call this one, "Box of Stars." 

(For those of you who don't know what this is it's Star Fruit!  My neighbor happen to give me this box of luscious lovelies during my walk with Na'u the other morning.)

Friday the 13th!

I love Friday the 13ths!  Nothing ominous about it to me except another wonderful day of discovery and opportunity to create!

Today, I chose to take my latest little love from Photojojo (one of my very fave sites!), the Digital Harinezumi, out and about this morning during my walk with Na'u.  Oh the fun we had!

 
 These images are pretty much straight out of the camera. No tweaking with Photoshop Actions.  Just a whole lot of wholesome goodness that reminds me of the 110 style of photos from my childhood.

Maile's Mano

 

I am blessed to be surrounded by such creative people. Most of them I can call my close friends. One such artist is my dear friend, Maile Ka'ai.  

I have admired her work for many, many years.  I was so elated to see this beautiful piece which is a black and white graphite drawing of a shark.  I love the detail...like the reflection of the water on it's topside! 

Maile is blessed with a very special talent, using her hands and eyes,  to reproduce life on paper and canvas. Not an easy task however, she does it so easily and so well!

I'm hoping to get this shark (and many of her other pieces) as wearable art! If you're interested in also wearing Maile's art please contact me. I will be posting more of her images from time to time so please check back. 

Remember, the holidays are here and artwork is always a great and unique gift to give your loved ones!!!

 

Temporary

Back in September I photographed Jasmyn and Aikane's spectacular wedding in Kona on the Big Island. Fortunately, while I was there, I was able to take some personal time to explore this part of the Big Island which I've grown to really love.  

There is something extremely special about the Big Island...the energy there is so magical to me.  It is the youngest of our island chain and yet so ancient in it's history and ways.  It's really hard for me to describe. I do know, though, that the "mana" (divine power) is dominant there. 

One of my favorite discoveries were these beautiful tide pools at Honaunau Bay which is located right next to Pu'u Honua O Honaunau or The City of Refuge.  I enjoyed sitting on the lava boulders in the crystal clear ocean water while watching the evening sunset.  It was so beautiful!

  

I decided to visit the same tide pool two days later to enjoy the same experience again before leaving for O'ahu.  I discovered that it was low tide and most of the tide pools were empty.

   

As I sat there, in the same tide pool that I recently happily soaked in, I thought to myself that this was a great reminder how temporary things can be.  We shouldn't assume that life will always be the same. 

People, places, things change.  

The reminder here is to really take in and enjoy every single moment, every single person and every place that you are experiencing. Be mindful and treasure it.

 
 

The Gold $1 Coin

Another miracle today! Look at this cool gold $1 coin I received from a parking lot machine. I have never seen one.  It's so pretty and it made me so happy to receive something so unique! 

 
 

Today's gift!

I look forward to receiving or witnessing something miraculous every day!  EVERY day we are blessed with some token of beauty and joy however, we need to be awake and aware in order to enjoy these gifts that are bestowed upon us.

During my power walk this evening I was overjoyed to see this:

  

I'm soooo glad I had my iPhone on me during my walk.  WOW!  It made me feel so warm inside as I was reminded once again of the goodness that life has to offer.  So appreciative to be able to witness something so spectacular while doing something much needed for myself.  Yipppeeee!!!!
 

Happy Henna Birthday!

My niece, Thing #1,  turned 15 last month. FIFTEEN!!!  I cannot believe how quickly time has flown by. And taking with it my little sweet innocent Precious Moments Adabada... 

 
 who was now a...TEENAGER!!!

 
 

Sigh...after swallowing that dose of reality, I decided that I wanted to give her something special for her birthday this year.  I knew that anything related to Blues Clues was out. No more Barbies or Disney Princess shoes, bags or tiaras...I really wanted to prevent any kind of eye rolling if at all possible.

Fortunately I was blessed and honored to meet Rebecca Braun of Lotus Palm Caravan at an O'ahu Wedding Association meeting that I attended recently.  Rebecca was demoing her "Timeless Art of Henna" where I of course, became a canvas for her. Well, actually my left palm did to be exact. She created a beautiful Mehndi which symbolized balance and new beginnings. I loved it!

   

With that in mind, I knew what I wanted to give Thing #1. A gift that symbolizes her rite of passage of turning 15.  Brilliant!!!

So this evening, Rebecca worked her Henna magic on my teenage niece.

A Columbus Day Gift!

This evening at sunset, while I was shooting at Point Panic, this beautiful anuenue (rainbow) displayed herself in all her glory! In fact, if you look closely, it's a double rainbow.  What a wonderful gift! And what a fabulous way to end my Columbus Day!!!

My Labor Day

When it comes to labor, what I do for a living is really not "work" but a labor of love.  MAHALO to all of my clients who provide me the opportunity to do what I love here in this place that I love so much!  

This Labor Day I took time off to enjoy some fun in the sun.  Days like this in the country help to bring me balance.  There's nothing like playing with Mother Nature!  I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing day too!

Project Focus Hawai'i

Tonight I was invited by my dear friend and fellow photographer, Lisa Uesugi, to the private Gallery Opening of Project Focus Hawai'i at The Pineapple Room in Macy's Ala Moana. 

Lisa and Laurie Breedan Callies are both island photographers who's worked I've admired for many many years.  Using their talent and skills they established this special non-profit in 2005 to help at-risk children use the camera to express themselves.  Tonight's exhibit is, I believe, the fourth they've had since starting Project Focus Hawai'i.  

I was totally mesmerized by the photos the kids had taken, their stories and the dedication of all the people involved in this project to help give these teens a sense of hope, self-confidence and pride in themselves.

After walking around, looking at the images and reading the stories behind them I reflected back to my own teenhood. Back then I thought I had it rough, life was hard, etc.  Now, I look back and think to myself how lucky and blessed I was to be able to attend a private school, be surrounded by loving family and friends, have a roof over my head and food to eat.  Nope, not so bad after all! There are always those out there who have it harder. And we must always remember to be grateful for all the abundance that we have in our lives!

I was soooo stoked that these kids learned the art of photography by shooting it old skool style - on a Holga camera!!! I used to love my Holga so much  that I wanted to name my kid "Holga." But that only lasted for a fraction of a second...

The images were also compiled into an Asuka keepsake book for the kids.  Right on Asuka Books for sponsoring!! 

I LOVED running into Arna, Steven and Franco - all above awesome photographers!!!

Oh! And meeting Jamie and Jason Yoshida of the Bead Gallery! I just LOVE these people!!!

They were so kind as to donate these bracelets they made for the kids.  They are such nice (and apparently fun) people!

Note to self: Take jewelry class with Jamie and Jason at their store the Bead Gallery on Ward.

Wally Amos opened the program by reading us a beautiful excerpt from his book, "Positive Thinking."

My Office

A lot of times, people will ask me, "So where is your office or studio located?"  Gratefully, I am able to extend my arms outward, above me and sideways to gesture and reply, "Everywhere!!!"  

Seriously, I don't have a physical office and my studio is all over our beautiful island and world! Wherever there's great smiles to capture and sweet light that place automatically turns into my studio.

My favorite phrase is "Do what you love, LOVE what you do!"  And gratefully, I am able to do so in a place that I love so much with people who I adore!!!!

How blessed am I!!!!  

Hale Macrobiotic

A couple of weeks ago my girlfriends and I decided to try this new organic healthy eatery called Hale Macrobiotic.  I'd never heard of Macrobiotic cooking before and decided to check it out.  

What is macrobiotic diet you ask?  It is defined by Wikipedia as, "A macrobiotic diet (or macrobiotics), from the Greek "macro" (large, long) and "bios" (life), is a dietary regimen that involves eating grains as a staple food supplemented with other foodstuffs such as vegetables and beans, and avoiding the use of highly processed or refined foods. Followers of the macrobiotic approach believe that food and food quality powerfully affect health, well-being, and happiness, and that a macrobiotic diet has more beneficial effects than others. The macrobiotic approach suggests choosing food that is less processed."

Google Macrobiotic. It's pretty interesting! I love the way it's not just about the food that's being eaten but the entire process of thought, how it's prepared, HOW it is eaten, etc.  This comes at a great time since I'm on an Ultimate Four Week Detox program (by Michelle Schoffro Cook) right now. So I'm eating mostly veggies and fruits.  No dairy, sugar, wheat, etc.  

Okay, so where was I...oh yes! Hale Macrobiotic which is right behind Sam's Club off of Keeaumoku near Ala Moana Shopping Center.

I was greeted by so many wonderful things and peeps such as:

To my delight I also found my dear friend Alice Inoue's smiling face as soon as you walk in through the door! Hi, Alice!!!  So appropriate!!!

And then, the next best thing, these two lovely ladies, Mana and Milani, ready to serve you and answer any questions that you may have!

I love the feel of the restaurant. I regret not bringing my Canon 5D to really capture the ambiance of the place. That's okay as this gives me a good reason to return, right Mana?

And there at the grill is Chef Moco herself, ready to create something magical for us! She is so sweet and friendly!

After I took in my new Macrobiotic environment I proceeded to read the menu:

Pita and Hummus (I could not eat this as it's not allowed in my detox diet. My gfriends had this delish dish)

Avocado (this, I happily consumed)!

Everything was so delish!

Thanks also to my girls for being sooooo patient with me every time a dish came out. They're so good about NOT touching the food and even styling it for me before I shoot it! You gals are awesome!!!

A Warrior Princess with Lip Gloss

Today is a very special day!

First of all, what makes us different from men?  Well, one of the most significant things would have to be our uterus!   

May 21st of every year is extremely special because one of my most bestest friends ever, soul sister and fellow artist, Debbie Friedrich, celebrates her hysterectomy which took place over 10 years ago!

Today, I celebrate you, my dear sweet friend, who with just A partial ovary, was able to conceive, bear and have two beautiful daughters!

Today, I celebrate, not what was taken from you but what you were left with which is your tenacious, fighting, compassionate and loving spirit!

I celebrate the beautiful woman who has handled the many adversities in her life with such strength and grace.  Becoming one of the most inspiring, respected and passionate women who I know and love...

My Amulet

I received a special gift from a friend of mine today.  I wanted to share this with you!

Here's what the little slip of paper said explaining the well known Yin Yang symbol read:

" Yin-Yang: a Chinese symbol of Taoist philosophy, a symbol of eternal existence and equilibrium in all the Universe, due to the balance of the opposing elements in Yin and Yang.  

White Yang - the masculine sign: active, day, symbol of heaven from which life came down, the endowing fertility, power of creating, domination, activity.

Black Yin - the feminine sign, passive, night, symbol of Mother Earth from which life springs, birth-giving fertility, destruction, dependence,. Symbol of life existing due to the balance of opposing forces.  Restores health and energetic balance of the organism."

Isn't this cool! I think it's safe to say that most of us are trying to achieve balance in life.  

It was so heart and soul warming to receive such a special reminder....

Cinco de Mayo, Crocs and Asagi Hatchery

Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone!  Another voggy day in Hawai'i nei!

However, that doesn't put a damper on a beautiful, productive day for Hokuli'i Images!

Today I was determined to get through my "To Do" list.  One of the items on that list was to buy my first pair of Crocs!  Many of my peeps know that I've been hemming and hawing about getting  a pair of these things.  Going on and on about "what color should I get", "what style," "will it make my feet look fat??" etc.  Well, I'm proud to say that I finally did it!

I purchased these cool royal purple Beach Crocs from City Mill in Kane'ohe. I just love City Mill! It's locally owned and they have all sorts of cool stuff besides hardware and gardening products.

Crocs are like you either love them or you dislike them.  My BSS in San Diego is most likely thinking, "Ger, what were you thinking???"  And I would counteract in saying, "But Deb! They're so comfy!!!"  I don't know what it is but I've ALWAYS been fascinated by them!

Okay, so I got my Cinco de Mayo Crocs on and headed straight over the hill to Asagi Hatchery in Kalihi. 

I've been helping to care for an abandoned chick by the name of Kapa.  (I think you've seen her in my previous posts.) Well, I've learned from a couple of true chick Chicks (my girlfriends, La and Ilima) that it would be best that Kapa had a companion. So thanks to these two chicken fans, they sent me over to Asagi Hatchery.

I could tell by the weathered signs that this business has been a part of the Kalihi landscape for many, many years.  Actually about 74 years to be exact. They've been here since 1935!

They are the only commercial hatchery in Hawai'i.

OMG!  I totally loved this sign. I can't help it! It's my proud pinay blood that runs through my veins!

So me and my lovely new Crocs stepped into the store with anticipation and enthusiasm! 

I scanned the area with excitement!  My eyes wandered slowly at all the signs that were hanging on the wall and all the various garden items they had for sale.

I love that they sell organic!  And that they're promoting self reliance (sustainability or whatever you want to call it) by selling organic seeds!

I enjoyed looking over the photos that clients have sent to the hatchery. Proud chicken parents who love their fowl and Asagi Hatchery!

And there in the window were the fuzzy little loves all aglow under the warming lamp...

Ahhhh....

I was greeted by Sharene Asagi, the office manager with so much ALOHA!  She and her granddaughter, Chanel, helped me to make my first chick purchase.  

And here we have our first Asagi chick! She is a Rhode Island Red x Leghorn. Which in chicken lingo means that she's a layers chick and will have eggs.  PERFECT!

Isn't she sweet???? She was making quite a fuss which totally concerned me.  All these questions started racing around in my mind!  What if Kapa doesn't like her and then she'd be so lonesome? Why is she chirping so much???  I wonder if I should have a margarita today??  

After much thought, a quick conference call to the team, we decided that yes!  It would be best to get this chick a companion chick as well!  (So the original companion chick for Kapa is now getting her own companion chick...savvy?)

So they are!

Sharene and Chanel even helped me to the car! How is that for sweetness and GREAT Customer Service???

I love family run businesses in Hawai'i.  I think it is extremely important to support local!  To me Asagi Hatchery is very special since:

 1) They've been a part of Hawai'i for decades

 2) It's operated by the 'ohana (Sharene is grandmother to Chanel. I also got to meet one of Sharene's daughter's Maxie who also helps to run the business and who's birthday just happens to be TODAY! Happy birthday, Maxie!)

3) They're promoting something that we all should be looking into if you have the time and space to do it. C'mon, peeps! Our own fresh eggs! There's NOTHING like them!!!

4) They are the sweetest, kindest and patient people ever!!!

MAHALO NUI LOA to Sharene and Chanel for making my chick buying experience so fun. You were both so patient and understanding. I hope to be back to visit with you again!!!

And to my chicken mentors, La and Ilima. You two are such amazing people!! Thank you for teaching me about these beautiful creatures.  They really are a joy and your mana'o, concern, and excitement are soooo appreciated!

Kubota's Success on the Beach: Day 2

Yesterday's workshop was beyond fun, overwhelming and EXCELLENT!!!  You can imagine how excited I was for day TWO!!!

As you know, I'm into reducing my carbon footprint as much as possible so fortunately I got to catch a ride with Arna into town.  Speaking of a greener earth...look what we stumbled upon in her neighborhood.

I was so excited to see the line up of all these new magnificent green waste containers!!! They were all patiently waiting like good little soldiers to be placed at their new locations.  Wow!!! What a great way to start the day!!!

Before I go on, I have to tell you that I brought my other trusty fotog companion, Keoki. He wanted to know what all this workshop stuff was about so he tagged along.  He seemed pretty interested!

Okay, so today at The Willows we learned more about workflow, sales and marketing.  I really enjoyed learning from all of our instructors.

Here's Kevin Kubota going over his workflow.  He's doing some of his Photoshop/Lightroom magic on this beautiful image of Joanna.

Jed Taufer presented some workflow as well. Jed is soooo funny!  I learned during this time that he really likes burritos!

Vicki also taught us about a whole lotta invaluable stuff!  This woman along with her burrito eating husband, are brilliant!!!

So during the two days, Vicki, Jed and Kevin would pull business cards out of a bag and give out some really great prizes!!

We were all waiting in anticipation and excitement for our name to be called.  For many moments I felt like I was in the audience on that show...The Price is Right!!!

Of course, we were all so happy (and I'm sure a bit envious)at Nicole Seu who won the grand prize...A COMPOSER LENSBABY!!!!  Right on, girlfriend!!!

You know, The Willows' Kapa'akea Room worked out perfectly for the workshop.

It was a wonderful place to shoot, learn and not to mention EAT!!!

I'd like to call this the "Oh, Wow! Lau-Lau!!" shot!  And it's totally dedicated to Chrissy!!!

During the breaks I noticed that a lot of the attendees loved sitting on or near this rock like Brooke Allen here soaking up the sun...

Ahhhhh....only in Hawai'i!!!

Besides learning from all of these great instructors and being inspired by them, one of my most FAVORITE things about attending the Kubota workshops is seeing and reconnecting with old friends!  Like Ramona of Photo Visions...girl! I'll always remember this moment when we couldn't decide which of Vicki's item's we should get!!!

Dianne Reynolds from Kaua'i who I met at my very first Kubota Workshop back in...2002??? Was it 2002, Kev??? Dianne? Anyone?? It was the one located at St. Stephen in Kailua...

Seriously, what a treat to have them return home to do a photography workshop.  And they brought along some friends to help make learning even more fun!  Vicki and Jed Taufer from V- Gallery Studios in Illinois, Asuka Books, and special guest Bill Moore of Silver Back Imaging.  For the next two days, I will be learning and being inspired amongst fellow talented photographers from not only all over the 50th State but from the mainland as well! 

Our first day, today,  was filled with all kinds of presentations. From topics like creativity and inspiration to two types of modeling shoots to workflow!  Here's what the day looked like at The Willows:

What an exciting way to start the week! I really LOVE learning and being inspired... In fact, I tell people that I am "an eternal student of life!"  I always try to keep my passion blazing by continuously feeding and nurturing my mind, body and soul.  So it is a true blessing that the Kubotas and Taufers are here on our island to share their wealth of knowledge, ideas and experience with all of us!

I can't wait for tomorrow!!!

I Love Blogging!!!

"Why do you love blogging?" 

I get asked this a lot because I have the die-hard habit of yelling, "OMG! I love blogging!!!" while jumping up and down and clapping like a cheerleader gone wild when someone mentions the word "BLOG."

So it doesn't come to my surprise that Six Apart would ask their bloggers this same question.

I love bullets so I'm going to make this simple and straight to the point.

I love blogging because...

• As a photographer I can share my images and convey the stories behind them.  Sure pictures are worth a thousand words however, if you saw an image like this, I'm sure a description would be a little helpful.   

 

• Which brings me to my next reason:  I love to share my thoughts, ideas and any experiences that I go through that could possibly inspire a viewer/reader. For instance this mold of my once badly somewhat disfigured teeth.  Please see my recent post: "Crooked Teeth = Dreams Come True."  If my posts inspires someone to try something new or think about things in a different way then that's just plain groovy!!!! I want my blog to be a place that inspires thought, laughter and maybe even positive change...

• I've been told time and time again, "I live vicariously through you by reading your blog!!!"  Look, I'm not out there skydiving or swimming with sharks (at least not yet) but whatever it is I am doing, people seem to get a big kick out of it!  From what I've been told I bring a little bit of adventure into their cubicle even if it's just featuring a fried gecko on a circuit board or having a bowl of Acai at a new eatery!!!  

• Blogging is a place for me to give praises or accolades when it's due.  I LOVE to support good people doing great things.  Or great products or businesses making a positive and healthy impact in our world!   

• I love that my English teacher can't grade me on what I write here!!!  I am, by all means, NOT a professional writer.  I pretty much write the way I speak and people get what I'm saying.  It's sooo cool!  

• Lastly, blogging is a wonderful platform to share this beautiful place called Hawai'i....through a local girl's eyes and heart.  Not to sound cheesy but I really, really love my home!  The places, people, culture, food...there is no place on earth like it! You get to read about Hawai'i not through some flashy commercial touristy website but from a local girl who lives, works, and plays here.  Blogging is just a super fun and easy way to share the ALOHA with the rest of the world!!!  

And there you have, Six Apart!  These are the reasons why I love Blogging! MAHALO NUI LOA for making it so dang easy and fun to blog!!! 

  

Crooked Teeth = Dreams Come True!!!

I hated my teeth growing up!  I come from extremely humble beginnings and having a fabulous smile was NOT on my mom's agenda of priorities.  Things like food and shelter came first!  But as a kid, especially as a teenager, those things came in last!  Achieving to look hip, cool and pretty took precedence over everything (it seems).

 
 

Back in 1988, when I joined the work force, I decided to take things into my own hands. I wanted a beautiful smile! I no longer wanted to have this set of choppers for the rest of my life!

 

I knew that it was going to be costly for braces. I didn't want to ask my mom or anyone for financial assistance.  I wanted to do it on my own.  So...I worked really hard, endured all the pain and "soft foods" that one could take (this is why I really, really dislike Clam Chowder to this day!) And then voila! Next thing you know I achieved the smile that will last me for a lifetime!

This is more than a story about crooked teeth...

I'm the kind of person that doesn't WAIT for things to happen.  I believe that if you're really passionate about something and you believe you can have it or do it, doors will open and you can achieve your dreams.  You need to be and stay positive, humble, and share that wonderful energy with everyone around you! Just live ALOHA!!!  

The mold of my teeth is such a great reminder for me of what you can do if you put your heart, mind and soul into it.  YOU CAN DO IT, Peeps!!!

I will not be carrying my mold with me for inspiration so please don't ask me to "buss' it out" when you see me, okay?  Just hold this story in your heart...my hope is that this post (yes, the mold of my teeth) will inspire you to take on your dreams and goals!!! Make it HAPPEN!!!

Ad2 Honolulu and Kanu Hawai'i

This morning I had the great opportunity to meet and work with the very talented and extremely funny Rae Huo.

I have admired her work through the years.  Her images have been published in many magazines such as "Hana Hou," "Honolulu Magazine," and other well known periodicals.  

Today Da Photo Chick was going to be on the other side of the camera.  The shoot was for Kanu Hawai'i.  An organization you all know I'm totally gung ho for! Kanu Hawai'i is the latest recipient of the a pro-bono marketing campaign which is organized by Ad Two Honolulu Public Service Committee.

I won't go into much details about what the shoot entailed as I would really love for you be surprised by the end result.  I can tell you that:

1) There were many participants who volunteered their time and energy for this campaign

and

2) We are all Kanu members!

The shoot was so awesome!  I was so delighted and intrigued by Rae's sense of humor!!

See what I mean?  This horse's head/mask totally slayed us! OMG!

Seriously, we all could not get over that horse's head.  We just totally loved it!

It would have been fun to have Rae photograph me as a horse however, I'm sure that would have been extremely tricky.  

It was super fun to watch Rae work and for such a great cause!

I was so happy to see James Koshiba again and meet his very cool friend Anim, who is the Director of National Programs for The Food Project in New York. Just a couple of bright, intelligent and ambitious guys who's making our world a better place, people!!!

Mahalo nui loa Kanu Hawai'i, Ad Two Honolulu, Ms. Tai Leong and of course, Rae Huo for making this morning so exceptionally special! What an honor to work with all of you!!!

Edna and The Genius Bar

Edna, my beautiful Apple PowerMac Dual Processor G5 who's been working with me since 2004, had to pay a visit to Ala Moana Apple E.R. - The Genius Bar.

I knew this day would inevitably come.  Edna had been showing signs of fatigue over the past few months. Shutting down randomly and experiencing stress by blowing her fans so loudly...at times sounding like she would take off!

Last night, I found her in one of those situations, fans blowing at a high pressure forcing me to shut her down.  In doing so, she never regained consciousness.  When I tried to wake her she would indicate some life but her monitor remained dark. Her familiar Apple chime didn't sound.  She was now in a computer coma...

I brought her to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Ala Moana tonight.

Here she is ready to be checked over by one of the Apple Genius Dudes.  

(BTW..that is NOT her monitor, kay?)

We were so fortunate to be helped by "Doctor" Genius Dude Ryan. He was sooooo kind and caring!  

He carefully looked Edna over and even called in assistance from another Doctor Genius Dude (who's name I didn't get) for his personal opinion.

From the technical lingo that was going back and forth between the two of them I knew it wasn't good news...

Sadly, Edna, had finally  come to her processing end.  She never really regained consciousness tonight. She pretty much bid her farewell right there at the Genius Bar...

Look, she's even getting a hug from the Doctor! (Well, that's what I'd like to think. I think he was just moving her.)

You know, I'm a loyal and true Apple Gal.  I love my Apples.  They are like family to me!  They work so hard and are such an integral and important part of my business!!!  Without them I'm like:

• A fish out of water   
• Cornflakes without the milk 
• Wonder Woman without her gold bracelets  

 I need my Apple Computers! 

Needless to say, it was a very sad day for Hokuli'i Images....

I am truly appreciative for Doctor Ryan and the other Doctor Genius Dude's help. Ryan was genuinely compassionate and understood how much Edna meant to me!  He even called her by her name which indicated to me that he is sweet and kind soul.  

Edna is named after Edna Mode from "The Incredibles." Ironically, Ryan was wearing this cool Apple Genuis shirt:

And if you remember from that movie, Edna Mode, says, "No capes!!!" 

I want to send a big MAHALO to Jan, Greg, Adam (the awesome Mac Dude who took so much time to explain some Apple stuff to me), the other Doctor Genuis Dude (who's name I didn't get).  You guys are sooo awesome!  

A very special MAHALO goes out to Ryan Miyashiro, Apple Genuis! THANK YOU for making this experience with Edna so much easier to deal with.  Your heartfelt service is what truly makes me such a big fan of Apple.  It's not just about the great products but also the great people behind them!  

You are a sweet and genuine person...MAHALO!!!

Little reminders...

We all have our good and bad days.  It's nice when we get reminders here and there to keep us in check!  For instance, this morning I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the busy-ness of life.  As I was running an errand in Kane'ohe, I came across this great message on the cover of a spare tire:

What an appropriate reminder!!!

We just need to pay attention.  No matter how challenged you're feeling there is always good and much abundance in your life.  And if you do pay close attention and open up your eyes and mind, the reminders are out there to help us along the way!!!

I am so proud to say that I did 850 Super Hula Hoops on my Wii Fit this morning after my 2.5 mile power walk!  What a great way to start the first week of February!

My 14 year old niece won't be too happy that I knocked her out of first place. I'm sure she'll do her darnedest to unseat me!

Alice Inoue at Barnes and Noble

I just want to send a quick CONGRATS out to my amazing and spiritual friend and mentor, Alice Inoue. Her prelim book/DVD signing took place tonight at Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana.  

Alice was so kind to partner with Kanu Hawai'i, one my fave local non-profit organizations "which is dedicated to creating a social movement to make Hawai'i a model of environmental sustainability and economic resilience."

All of the sales proceeds tonight will go towards Alice and Kanu Hawai'i's mutual mission for creating a compassionate community!!! Soooo cool!

I just adore James of Kanu Hawai'i!  He's such a cool guy!  He is one of the many brains and heart beats of this special organization.

It was fun to meet many of Alice's supporters such as Ron Nagasawa of Midweek. Such a nice guy!

A very HARSH Reality!!!

This is a very difficult post for me to write however, I am following my na'au (instincts) because I feel it is extremely important to share this with you.

On Dr. Martin Luther King Day I went out to the country to spend some time with my niece and nephew.  As we walked along the beach we found a young sea turtle basking in the sun.

As we carefully approached it (while keeping a respective distance) I was shocked and horrified to find that this poor creature had a tumor attached to it's head!!!

The feeling of anguish, sadness, anger and helplessness hit me all at once!!!  I felt strongly that pollution of our waters played a big part in the toxic growth attached to this innocent sea turtle's head. 

Here is this turtle... born to swim, play, eat and breed in our oceans.  They have NO CONTROL over the conditions of their playground!  And sadly, no voice to let us know that they are in trouble...

As I choked back my tears, I explained to my niece and nephew how important it is that WE help to stop pollution and keep our waters, land, and air CLEAN!!!

It is our kuleana, our responsibility, to take care of this beautiful place we call home! 

My First 2009 Beach Excursion!

After battling with a cold for most of December and dealing with the unpredictable Winter island weather, I welcomed this sunny, beautiful ALOHA Friday!

The invitation to join Arna, KC Boy and Maile to Lanikai Beach for some R & R was too appealing and I couldn't pass it up.  It's been way too long since I've been in the ocean!  

It's always so fun to be at the beach with a 6 year old.  They always remind me to be a kid!

I spent some time lying on the beach staring at the clouds.  I was so grateful for living in such a beautiful place and for having the opportunity to have a little time out.  I silently asked Ke Akua for the form of a heart and sure enough within seconds, my prayers were answered...

I enjoyed watching KC Boy play with his mom, Maile, playing in the sand.  Maile is such a wonderful mom and KC Boy is soooo lucky to have her as his support and maternal guide through life!

I had a really wonderful time at Lanikai Beach with my friends this afternoon. Being enveloped by the ocean water and feeling the sun on my back felt like Ke Akua giving me a big warm hug...what a great way to start 2009!!!

Welcoming 2009 with a BANG-gle!!!

Well, the BANGLES to be exact!!!  

New Year's Eve...what a great way to enter into 2009!

I was fortunate enough to shoot for my friend Lincoln Jacobe and his company, Hawai'i Pacific Entertainment, who is the promotional group who brought The Bangles into Honolulu. 

 

Okay, let me lay it down for you right now. I LOVE The Bangles!!! I'm a child of the 80's and they were the group that adorned my bedroom walls.  

I saw them in concert about 20 years ago - sixth row at the Blaisdell Arena where they changed their hit song, "Walk Like an Egyptian" to "Walk Like a Hawaiian" according to another fan who attended the same concert. For some odd reason I can't remember that.  Maybe I was just too high on seeing them in person at the time or maybe I was just plain high! (Just kidding!!! Sorry mom!)

Anyways, you can imagine what a treat it was for me to see these women once again.  But this time as an adult, professional business woman...working!  Not to mention enjoying...a lot!  My BFF and mentor, Arna, came along for the ride and it was a lot of fun.

Meeting the Bangles in person was like a dream come true.  They did NOT disappoint!  They were not only glamorous & beautiful but more importantly kind and extremely gracious.

Although one of their original members, Michael Steele, was not present (and totally missed), The Peterson sisters and Susanna pulled off the concert in true Bangle style!!

Champagne flowed, hugs were freely given and then came the encore song...

A Grand Farewell To Peggy Chun!

At Kawaiha'o Church this afternoon, family and friends bid farewell to our beloved Peggy Chun.

It was so nice to see so many familiar faces!  Some proudly dressed up in Peggy style!

In tribute to Peggy, a group of us came as rainbow butterflies...

The infamous and loving, Pegs Legs were all there helping out as usual, giving of themselves!

During the viewing friends and family were entertained by a wonderful harpist

and also one of Peg's favorite groups,  our island's Puamana.

The service opened with our dear friend Kaliko Beamer Trapp doing an Oli.

The service was presided over Reverend Clarence Liu, a chaplain of Hospice Hawai'i.

There were several meles played including a solo by Keola Beamer (I LOVED that he kept his antennas on for his performance)!

And another song (a ho'okupu mele) which he played and sang while his wife Moana danced while tears streamed down her beautiful face.

One of Peggy's favorite singers, the extremely talented Malia Ka'ai Barrett, sang two angelic songs which moved many to tears...

The Eulogy was presented by Peg's husband Elroy Chun.

And a variety of other speeches were made by Peggy's younger brother, Michael Richard,

another brother Peter Richard.  

Everyone wasn't surprised to find three huge penguins stepping up to the podium.

Marvel Armitage, who is a Peg's Legs Caregiver, gave a moving and eloquent speech about Peg. 

And Eric Chun, Peggy and Elroy's son, made us all

laugh...

and cry...

I bet Peg was cruising over and around us just smiling from ear to ear and laughing her heart out!

 

 

I'm so glad to have been able to be amongst all these wonderful people who have loved and been loved by Peggy during her lifetime.

We will miss you, radiant, fun-loving and beautiful, Peggy Chun!  MAHALO for teaching all of us how to color outside of the lines!!!

The Incredible Debbie Friedrich and & 60 Mile Walk!

My BFF/BSS in San Diego is so awesome!  On Friday, 11/21/08 she started her 3 Day, 60 Mile Walk for the Susan C. Komen Foundation!

Deb was fired up with all the motivational speeches and supporters along the way.  

Day two she was a little sore and not as rested but charged on like the trooper that she is!

Day three, she completed this humungous undertaking!

And throughout the entire event, she always walked with a smile, a light heart, and happy feet!  

Debbie, THANK YOU, for being so inspiring and for doing what you've done!  As always, you've contributed to the positive flow in life by helping others and bringing a smile to everyone who you touch!  I am sooooooo proud to call you my BFF!!!

Today I carpooled with Arna to visit our dear friend, Peggy Chun.  She is one of the most inspirational persons that I have the great honor of knowing!

I've always enjoyed going over to see Peggy.  Back in the days of mischief and merriment, her home was the gathering place for many outrageous and memorable get togethers.

I love that they're already set up for the holidays!!!

It was so enjoyable seeing and being with Peg.  And of course catching up with Kimi Chun is always a pleasure.

The Good Kine Mail

Mail...remember when it used to come in only one form? The kind in the actual mailbox on your street?

Today, we're bombarded by mail in the mailbox, mail on your computer, mail even on your cellphone!!! It could drive a person to go postal!  (no offense!)

Amongst all that mail, mail, mail, there's usually maybe ONE item that's worth looking at and even keeping. Sometimes there's none at all!  Well, today, I was so surprised to find a lovely gift in my actual mailbox (the street one).

I received this BEAUTIFUL, long awaited book written by my very dear friend and spiritual mentor, Alice Inoue.  

As soon as I pulled it out of the bubble wrap envelope, I felt this flood of overwhelming pride and love! Her book is beautiful!!!  

It's a simple and easy read with empowering words of wisdom, enlightenment and guidance.  I can't wait to read it!!!

Aloha Tower meets Kanu Hawai'i!!!

Holy camoley, people!!!  This evening's TWC/Diva's Doing Good fundraiser for Kanu Hawai'i was DA BOMB!!!  The turn out was fantastic!

The afternoon started with a fun makeup session with my ever so talented brother-in-law, Jonathan Freitas (Makeup by Jon Freitas).  He worked on both Aubrey and I.

We arrived at the historic Aloha Tower to find that the place was already hopping and jumping! In the distance I could hear one of my favorite island duets, Maila Gibson and Ben Vega, filling the event with their mele.  Shmooooooth....

I cannot even begin to tell you what a great time I had with my fellow J.U.Gettes!

Olivia, Kalele, Aubrey and I excitedly entered the event and were greeted by so many happy familiar faces.

Aubrey and I were so honored to be chosen as one of the 50 Divas Doing Good.  

Each of the honorary Divas needed to do a video interview and give their mana'o (thoughts) on what Kanu Hawai'i means to them and what commitment they are willing to make. 

My main commitment: To help clean up Hawai'i's beaches!

After we finished our interviews it was off to more grinds, hugging and laughing!! 

Great to see IMUA's Fred DeAngelo and his crew of Ola's volunteering their time, kau-kau and energies to a great cause!

along with her equally stunning sister, Brandy Antonelis, joined in on the festivities as well.

Ladies, be on the lookout for these two sisters! They're opening up their own boutique in Manoa Marketplace in October and it is going to be fashion heaven!  I can't wait for Adoracion Boutique to open it's doors!!! Stay tuned for more exciting information!!!

During the event, I briefly saw Kelly Sugano of a Perfect Day running around with her very busy crew.  I was so happy that Mary actually got to stop for a second for a quick photo.  MAHALO, Mary, Kelly and APD Crew for all your kokua!!!
