Sometimes people ask me, "what does 'hokuli'i' mean?"
When broken down:
Hoku = star
li'i = little
So Hokuli'i means? You got it! Little Star!
During my singing days at Maryknoll, I sang with two of my best friends - Cassandra Veatch and Carla Isabelo. We formed the group KUAIPA.
I was the only one in the trio that didn't have a Hawaiian name. Fortunately, I had my Hawaiian teacher, Mrs. Kupau, to turn to for guidance. She said, "let me think about it." And overnight she came up with the name that she felt suited me. Hence the origin of Hokuli'i!
Through the years I've had an affinity for that name. So when I formed my company back in 1999 that was the first and only name that came to me!
MAHALO NUI LOA, Mrs. Cynthia Kupau! Who would have thought that the name you blessed me with many years ago would become so significant to me and for those I work and play with!!! You will always hold a very special place in my heart...
