A Hawai'i December Morning

Okay, I don't mean to brag...but then again, maybe I do!  I can't help it!  Look at this gorgeous December morning in Kahalu'u!  This is what our winter is like. While our mainland counterparts have their White (albeit cold) Wintery Wonderland, this is what we are blessed with in our islands.

An Anti-Static Home

Discovery! I finally found a home for my SATA Hard Drives which have been sitting in anti-static bags!

  

I found these anti-static storage boxes at www.meritline.com.

Whew!  I'm so happy to have found these as I was getting tired of my hard working drives sitting in bags.  At least this way they'll be secure and hopefully won't fall victim to the Kane'ohe mold!
 

Friday the 13th!

I love Friday the 13ths!  Nothing ominous about it to me except another wonderful day of discovery and opportunity to create!

Today, I chose to take my latest little love from Photojojo (one of my very fave sites!), the Digital Harinezumi, out and about this morning during my walk with Na'u.  Oh the fun we had!

 
 These images are pretty much straight out of the camera. No tweaking with Photoshop Actions.  Just a whole lot of wholesome goodness that reminds me of the 110 style of photos from my childhood.

Temporary

Back in September I photographed Jasmyn and Aikane's spectacular wedding in Kona on the Big Island. Fortunately, while I was there, I was able to take some personal time to explore this part of the Big Island which I've grown to really love.  

There is something extremely special about the Big Island...the energy there is so magical to me.  It is the youngest of our island chain and yet so ancient in it's history and ways.  It's really hard for me to describe. I do know, though, that the "mana" (divine power) is dominant there. 

One of my favorite discoveries were these beautiful tide pools at Honaunau Bay which is located right next to Pu'u Honua O Honaunau or The City of Refuge.  I enjoyed sitting on the lava boulders in the crystal clear ocean water while watching the evening sunset.  It was so beautiful!

  

I decided to visit the same tide pool two days later to enjoy the same experience again before leaving for O'ahu.  I discovered that it was low tide and most of the tide pools were empty.

   

As I sat there, in the same tide pool that I recently happily soaked in, I thought to myself that this was a great reminder how temporary things can be.  We shouldn't assume that life will always be the same. 

People, places, things change.  

The reminder here is to really take in and enjoy every single moment, every single person and every place that you are experiencing. Be mindful and treasure it.

 
 

The Hokuli'i Surboard

How sweet is this! My darling niece, Angelica Mae, who resides in California (and loves all things Hawai'i) had a Sean Johnson custom surf board made for her with my Hokuli'i Logo!  I had heard about it while it was being made and finally got to see it in person during my trip to Cali in July.

Canon Professional Services

To my surprise, I received a big ol' box in the mail today!

  

It was my goodies from joining the Canon Professional Services. As you know I am a Canon girl.  I just recently stumbled upon this program for pros so I thought I'd give it a try.  

As a Platinum member you get all sorts of benefits and goodies.  I was really impressed with the Think Tank Glass Taxi and Chimp Cage (worth about $180) bags  that came with my membership. Part of the $500 I paid as a Platinum Member.

  

I'm a huge stickler for making sure every piece of equipment functions in tip top shape and is clean, clean, clean!   After looking at how much I spent last year in repairs and maintenance of my equipment (way over $500) I thought it would be worth it to give CPS a try and see if it saves me some $$$ in the next year. I've already experienced some savings with the recent cleaning of my Canon 5D sensors! Hooray!

In the long run, if it doesn't turn out to be as valuable as I thought it would be it's totally okay with me as I get a couple of cool Think Tank bags, CPS camera straps (not too girlie but it's sturdy), extra lens and body caps, the latest EF Lens Work III Book, cleaning cloth, tripod pad and a cute CPS pin which I have no idea what to do with!

 
   

The Gold $1 Coin

Another miracle today! Look at this cool gold $1 coin I received from a parking lot machine. I have never seen one.  It's so pretty and it made me so happy to receive something so unique! 

 
 

Today's gift!

I look forward to receiving or witnessing something miraculous every day!  EVERY day we are blessed with some token of beauty and joy however, we need to be awake and aware in order to enjoy these gifts that are bestowed upon us.

During my power walk this evening I was overjoyed to see this:

  

I'm soooo glad I had my iPhone on me during my walk.  WOW!  It made me feel so warm inside as I was reminded once again of the goodness that life has to offer.  So appreciative to be able to witness something so spectacular while doing something much needed for myself.  Yipppeeee!!!!
 

Happy Henna Birthday!

My niece, Thing #1,  turned 15 last month. FIFTEEN!!!  I cannot believe how quickly time has flown by. And taking with it my little sweet innocent Precious Moments Adabada... 

 
 who was now a...TEENAGER!!!

 
 

Sigh...after swallowing that dose of reality, I decided that I wanted to give her something special for her birthday this year.  I knew that anything related to Blues Clues was out. No more Barbies or Disney Princess shoes, bags or tiaras...I really wanted to prevent any kind of eye rolling if at all possible.

Fortunately I was blessed and honored to meet Rebecca Braun of Lotus Palm Caravan at an O'ahu Wedding Association meeting that I attended recently.  Rebecca was demoing her "Timeless Art of Henna" where I of course, became a canvas for her. Well, actually my left palm did to be exact. She created a beautiful Mehndi which symbolized balance and new beginnings. I loved it!

   

With that in mind, I knew what I wanted to give Thing #1. A gift that symbolizes her rite of passage of turning 15.  Brilliant!!!

So this evening, Rebecca worked her Henna magic on my teenage niece.

The Holiday Inn Express!

During my visit to California in June, my cousin hooked me up at the Holiday Inn Express in Lake Elsinore.

 
 May I just say "WOW!!"  Holiday Inn has done an incredible job rebranding itself!

This is a brand new Holiday Inn Express and if I remember correctly a prototype for many others that are popping up all over the country!

My Office

A lot of times, people will ask me, "So where is your office or studio located?"  Gratefully, I am able to extend my arms outward, above me and sideways to gesture and reply, "Everywhere!!!"  

Seriously, I don't have a physical office and my studio is all over our beautiful island and world! Wherever there's great smiles to capture and sweet light that place automatically turns into my studio.

My favorite phrase is "Do what you love, LOVE what you do!"  And gratefully, I am able to do so in a place that I love so much with people who I adore!!!!

How blessed am I!!!!

A Warrior Princess with Lip Gloss

Today is a very special day!

First of all, what makes us different from men?  Well, one of the most significant things would have to be our uterus!   

May 21st of every year is extremely special because one of my most bestest friends ever, soul sister and fellow artist, Debbie Friedrich, celebrates her hysterectomy which took place over 10 years ago!

Today, I celebrate you, my dear sweet friend, who with just A partial ovary, was able to conceive, bear and have two beautiful daughters!

Today, I celebrate, not what was taken from you but what you were left with which is your tenacious, fighting, compassionate and loving spirit!

I celebrate the beautiful woman who has handled the many adversities in her life with such strength and grace.  Becoming one of the most inspiring, respected and passionate women who I know and love...

I was sooooo delightfully surprised to see this humangous Duratrans at Ala Moana!  Ad2 Honolulu and Rae Huo did such an awesome job.  The Kanu Hawai'i Campaign is in full force and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you sign up and become members!

Aunty's Day

I was so delighted to receive this precious note from one of my nephews, KC Boy.  Although I may not be a mother with children, I am a mother to my beloved pets and most importantly an auntie to many special nephews and nieces. 

I love this sweet reminder of how I LOVE being an auntie!

Cinco de Mayo, Crocs and Asagi Hatchery

Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone!  Another voggy day in Hawai'i nei!

However, that doesn't put a damper on a beautiful, productive day for Hokuli'i Images!

Today I was determined to get through my "To Do" list.  One of the items on that list was to buy my first pair of Crocs!  Many of my peeps know that I've been hemming and hawing about getting  a pair of these things.  Going on and on about "what color should I get", "what style," "will it make my feet look fat??" etc.  Well, I'm proud to say that I finally did it!

I purchased these cool royal purple Beach Crocs from City Mill in Kane'ohe. I just love City Mill! It's locally owned and they have all sorts of cool stuff besides hardware and gardening products.

Crocs are like you either love them or you dislike them.  My BSS in San Diego is most likely thinking, "Ger, what were you thinking???"  And I would counteract in saying, "But Deb! They're so comfy!!!"  I don't know what it is but I've ALWAYS been fascinated by them!

Okay, so I got my Cinco de Mayo Crocs on and headed straight over the hill to Asagi Hatchery in Kalihi. 

I've been helping to care for an abandoned chick by the name of Kapa.  (I think you've seen her in my previous posts.) Well, I've learned from a couple of true chick Chicks (my girlfriends, La and Ilima) that it would be best that Kapa had a companion. So thanks to these two chicken fans, they sent me over to Asagi Hatchery.

I could tell by the weathered signs that this business has been a part of the Kalihi landscape for many, many years.  Actually about 74 years to be exact. They've been here since 1935!

They are the only commercial hatchery in Hawai'i.

OMG!  I totally loved this sign. I can't help it! It's my proud pinay blood that runs through my veins!

So me and my lovely new Crocs stepped into the store with anticipation and enthusiasm! 

I scanned the area with excitement!  My eyes wandered slowly at all the signs that were hanging on the wall and all the various garden items they had for sale.

I love that they sell organic!  And that they're promoting self reliance (sustainability or whatever you want to call it) by selling organic seeds!

I enjoyed looking over the photos that clients have sent to the hatchery. Proud chicken parents who love their fowl and Asagi Hatchery!

And there in the window were the fuzzy little loves all aglow under the warming lamp...

Ahhhh....

I was greeted by Sharene Asagi, the office manager with so much ALOHA!  She and her granddaughter, Chanel, helped me to make my first chick purchase.  

And here we have our first Asagi chick! She is a Rhode Island Red x Leghorn. Which in chicken lingo means that she's a layers chick and will have eggs.  PERFECT!

Isn't she sweet???? She was making quite a fuss which totally concerned me.  All these questions started racing around in my mind!  What if Kapa doesn't like her and then she'd be so lonesome? Why is she chirping so much???  I wonder if I should have a margarita today??  

After much thought, a quick conference call to the team, we decided that yes!  It would be best to get this chick a companion chick as well!  (So the original companion chick for Kapa is now getting her own companion chick...savvy?)

So they are!

Sharene and Chanel even helped me to the car! How is that for sweetness and GREAT Customer Service???

I love family run businesses in Hawai'i.  I think it is extremely important to support local!  To me Asagi Hatchery is very special since:

 1) They've been a part of Hawai'i for decades

 2) It's operated by the 'ohana (Sharene is grandmother to Chanel. I also got to meet one of Sharene's daughter's Maxie who also helps to run the business and who's birthday just happens to be TODAY! Happy birthday, Maxie!)

3) They're promoting something that we all should be looking into if you have the time and space to do it. C'mon, peeps! Our own fresh eggs! There's NOTHING like them!!!

4) They are the sweetest, kindest and patient people ever!!!

Earth Day at Red Ginger Cafe in Manoa

Today is Earth Day.  Actually, in my world, I try to make Earth Day EVERY DAY!!!  However, today is the designated day to "inspire awareness and appreciation for Earth's environment."

As much as I wanted to get my hands close to Mother Earth today,  I unfortunately didn't have time to plant anything.  Instead, I had two very special meetings which took place at one of my fave places to hang in Manoa, Red Ginger Cafe in Manoa Marketplace.

Aaaaahhhh...Red Ginger Cafe...I love this place! It's locally owned and it's owners are earth conscious business owners who help our islands by purchasing locally grown produce and other eco friendly gift items. 

Before I go on with the gift items, check out this beautiful salad my friend Melanie Kawai, Red Ginger Cafe owner (AND IMUA graduate), made for me:

Organic greens, grilled chicken, organic eggs, and advocado served with a Papaya dressing on the side.  That's my Earth Day purchase for today!  MAHALO, Melanie! It was sooo yummy!!!

OMG!!! And I was soooo excited to try one of their hot selling items: Coldfyyre Ice Cream Sandwiches! (NOTE: These were just display samples.  They are NOT served in a martini glass with little glass balls)

Fortunately, Aubrey of Savoir Faire, who I was meeting with, also wanted to try one so here's what a REAL one looks like:

Melanie told me that they were having a difficult time keeping these frozen treats in stock. Everyone LOVES them!  Even my clients who I was meeting with tried a little piece and ended up purchasing FIVE Coldfyyre Sandwiches!  Cool, huh?  (No pun intended!)

iPhone Case

Hey gang!  I just wanted to share with you my cute little iPhone case.

I couldn't believe the outrageous prices for iPhone cases. I mean, I totally understand that you'd want to protect your $200 investment however, $30+ for a case??  

Believe it or not I found this one at LONGS Drugstore for $8!  I kid you not! Isn't it so cute?

What I like about it is that it makes people smile.  :)

Kubota's Success on the Beach: Day 2

Yesterday's workshop was beyond fun, overwhelming and EXCELLENT!!!  You can imagine how excited I was for day TWO!!!

As you know, I'm into reducing my carbon footprint as much as possible so fortunately I got to catch a ride with Arna into town.  Speaking of a greener earth...look what we stumbled upon in her neighborhood.

I was so excited to see the line up of all these new magnificent green waste containers!!! They were all patiently waiting like good little soldiers to be placed at their new locations.  Wow!!! What a great way to start the day!!!

Before I go on, I have to tell you that I brought my other trusty fotog companion, Keoki. He wanted to know what all this workshop stuff was about so he tagged along.  He seemed pretty interested!

Okay, so today at The Willows we learned more about workflow, sales and marketing.  I really enjoyed learning from all of our instructors.

Here's Kevin Kubota going over his workflow.  He's doing some of his Photoshop/Lightroom magic on this beautiful image of Joanna.

Jed Taufer presented some workflow as well. Jed is soooo funny!  I learned during this time that he really likes burritos!

Vicki also taught us about a whole lotta invaluable stuff!  This woman along with her burrito eating husband, are brilliant!!!

We were all waiting in anticipation and excitement for our name to be called.  For many moments I felt like I was in the audience on that show...The Price is Right!!!

Of course, we were all so happy (and I'm sure a bit envious)at Nicole Seu who won the grand prize...A COMPOSER LENSBABY!!!!  Right on, girlfriend!!!

You know, The Willows' Kapa'akea Room worked out perfectly for the workshop.

It was a wonderful place to shoot, learn and not to mention EAT!!!

I'd like to call this the "Oh, Wow! Lau-Lau!!" shot!  And it's totally dedicated to Chrissy!!!

During the breaks I noticed that a lot of the attendees loved sitting on or near this rock like Brooke Allen here soaking up the sun...

Ahhhhh....only in Hawai'i!!!

Besides learning from all of these great instructors and being inspired by them, one of my most FAVORITE things about attending the Kubota workshops is seeing and reconnecting with old friends!  Like Ramona of Photo Visions...girl! I'll always remember this moment when we couldn't decide which of Vicki's item's we should get!!!

Dianne Reynolds from Kaua'i who I met at my very first Kubota Workshop back in...2002??? Was it 2002, Kev??? Dianne? Anyone?? It was the one located at St. Stephen in Kailua...

Crooked Teeth = Dreams Come True!!!

I hated my teeth growing up!  I come from extremely humble beginnings and having a fabulous smile was NOT on my mom's agenda of priorities.  Things like food and shelter came first!  But as a kid, especially as a teenager, those things came in last!  Achieving to look hip, cool and pretty took precedence over everything (it seems).

 
 

Back in 1988, when I joined the work force, I decided to take things into my own hands. I wanted a beautiful smile! I no longer wanted to have this set of choppers for the rest of my life!

 

I knew that it was going to be costly for braces. I didn't want to ask my mom or anyone for financial assistance.  I wanted to do it on my own.  So...I worked really hard, endured all the pain and "soft foods" that one could take (this is why I really, really dislike Clam Chowder to this day!) And then voila! Next thing you know I achieved the smile that will last me for a lifetime!

This is more than a story about crooked teeth...

I'm the kind of person that doesn't WAIT for things to happen.  I believe that if you're really passionate about something and you believe you can have it or do it, doors will open and you can achieve your dreams.  You need to be and stay positive, humble, and share that wonderful energy with everyone around you! Just live ALOHA!!!  

The mold of my teeth is such a great reminder for me of what you can do if you put your heart, mind and soul into it.  YOU CAN DO IT, Peeps!!!

Skittles Sunday

Michelle Guda (aka "Honey Babe), one of my BFFs,  came up with a brilliant idea! She wanted to take photos in front of Maryknoll's  colorful "construction" wall in front of the upcoming Maryknoll School Community Center which is slated to open on May 7, 2009.

First things first...kau-kau!!!

Michelle & :Dave, Tiara & Brian and myself powered up with several bowls of amazing Pho in Chinatown at Golden River Restaurant on the corner of King St. and River St.  WOW!!!  Super ono, kay?  Thanks to T, for this delicious suggestion!

After lunch we were powered up and ready to roll!

How many times have you passed by this wall on Dole Street and Alexander Street? Maybe on your way to jump onto H-1?  I LOVE this wall!!!  The overall theme to the shoot would be "grade school fun!"

Back in 2003, I met Tiara and Brian.  I had the great fortune to photograph their wedding and ever since then we've become friends!

How fun to be able to shoot one of my favorite couples again! I just LOVE these two!!!

What a privilege to photograph Michelle and El Presidente himself, Mr. Dave Miyamoto! (Honey Boy, I was small kine nervous, kay???)

I love these photos that Tiara and Bri took!!!

You know what's so neat (besides this incredible time with these cool people)?  Is the sweet fact that Michelle and Dave met Tiara and Brian for the FIRST TIME this afternoon!!!  It was soooo awesome and I'm not surprised that they would all get along!  

Fortunately, we did these photos this past Sunday. I just drove by this same wall yesterday and found that part of it was gone!  Like life, things are only temporary so you have to seize the day!  Like Michelle said, "Here today, gone tomorrow...."

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for an incredible afternoon, T, Bri, Mimi, and Honey Boy!!!  My spirit is soooo happy and my soul rejoices for our special friendship!!!  I love you guys!!

Bun in Da Oven

I visited with a couple of my friends tonight.  They had both atttended a Baby Shower earlier in the day.  One of their contributions to the party were the favors.  

People, I think that this has got to be one of the most clever and fun Baby Shower favors I have ever seen!

How clever is this???  I was simply amazed!!!

I seriously needed to share this with you because the detail and hard work that went into these delightful party pieces were phenomenal!!!  And this is just ONE oven!  They lovingly made FORTY of them!!!

Well done, Shredder and Game Face!!!  You girlz ROCK!!!

Brush Picks

I'm always interested in new things. Whether it be new gadgets, experiences, people, etc. I love experiencing anything out of my ordinary world.  

For instance, I was visiting with my friend in Kona, and after having a delightful meal, she busted out this out of the ordinary toothpick:

I was like, "what the heck is that?!?!?"  Apparently, it's like her favorite toothpick in the world! 

Look at how beneficial it is for your teeth and gums.

I tried it out and was quite surprised at how well it worked!  Sadly, you can't get this any where in the State of Hawai'i.  So if you're on the mainland and come across this box of delightful teeth and gum cleaner, it might be good for you to add it to your dental hygiene routine!

Easy Eats!

I'm not much of a cook.  Yes, I can cook rice (this is one staple you NEED to know how to make growing up in a 1) Filipino household and 2) growing up in the islands) however, I am not a cook.  

Tonight was one of those, "I wonder what I should have for dinner?" nights. While walking around Safeway I remembered having one of their Safeway Select Pizza's at a friends house recently. Those who were present to partake in that meal were really impressed with the pizza!

So I wandered over to the freezer section and was delighted to find that their pizzas were on sale!!!  Check this out! They were only $4.99!!! Can you believe it??? A whole pizza  for $4.99!!! Less than one plate lunch!

I brought my frozen quick and easy entree home and before you know it...voila!

Okay, I embellished a little and put a little more baby tomatoes and parmesan cheese.  It was sooooo ono!!!  

I am pretty impressed with Safeway Select products! I think I shall try other Safeway Select foods and goods and share what I think of them.  For now, I'm just going to sit here and enjoy my meal!

February 11th Babies

Some of the best people I know are born in the month of February. Seriously!  Aquarians have got to be some of the most loving, caring people I know!!!

The HokuCam is in the HOUSE!!!

Guess what I got in the mail today???  

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!!! Yes she's here!!!  My Mino HD Camcorder from The Flip!  

I know, I know...many of you out there are thinking "Oh no! A Flip with a Flip!"  Yes! It's true! This Filipino gal is taking it up several notches in documenting life here in beautiful Hawai'i (and where evers).  I don't know if you know this but I did get an Associates Degree in Multimedia and Communications from Belleve Community College in Washington State. And one of the main mediums I was trained in was video! 

Video has come a long way from the early 90's. Same fundamental rules in creating an image (like in photography).  Just this way it's soooooo much easier!

Ain't she pretty??? She's even customized/personalized with one of our Ulu Art images.  That's one of my favorite places on the Windward side - Kane'ohe Bay. That "mountain" just happens to be Kanehoalani which is the highest peak of Kualoa Ridge and a source of inspiration for me.  

I'm a no frills kinda gal. I LOVE simple and uncomplicated. Which is why I fell in love with this device!

So don't say I didn't warn you, peeps! When you see the HokuCam (Hokuli'i Images) or CamCam (as in Camarillo. I think I'd use this name when I'm documenting family or personal stuff, I think) or HamCam (if I'm documenting Arna's Mini Pot Belly Pig, Pua).  Whatever the case may be, just BE PREPARED!!! The ride just got even more fun!!!

Welcome to the World of Coolness!!!

I did it!  Tonight, I walked into one of my most favorite places in the world, The Apple Store, and bit the bullet (or Apple, I should say).

I got myself an iPhone!  

Thanks to my Apple Dude, Jeff Kurio (who protested being on my blog), I was hooked up and ready to roll.  All within 20 minutes! (Yes, Jeff, I didn't count the minutes it took me to figure out what plan to get).

Look!  I even got my first TEXT message from my gal pal, Ilima Sheems! 

What an exciting evening!  Thanks to Jeff Kurio at the Ala Moana Apple Store for making the process of switching to Verizon to AT&T painless.  And of course, to Steve Jobs and the whole Apple world for creating these amazing devices!

The next time I call you, just know that I'll be talking from my new iPhone!

Only in Kane'ohe!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like there are A LOT of geckos in Kane'ohe!  Today I visited with my BFF and mentor, Arna of Arna Photography and Ulu Art.  She and KC Boy (our dear friend Maile's smart & handsome 6 year old son) was in the middle of disassembling her $5000 printer because of this:

Yes, folks, a gecko had crawled into the printer seeking warmth and fried itself on the power supply board!!!  

Sadly, this was the SECOND time this has happened!  Here's the first fried gecko back in July of 2007:

 

It's a very costly situation for a little lizard's assumption of toasty comfort!
